After a nice cup of coffee this gorgeous December morning, I decided to remove the rel=”nofollow” attribute that ultimately makes your backlinks worth… well, nothing.

Why did I remove the nofollow attribute?

A few reasons. Firstly, DoFollow will encourage people to participate in discussions. Of course, that brings us to the subject of spammers. Wouldn’t it make it easier for spammers to build backlinks? Well of course it would. If they could get away with posting their spammy comments on the blog that is.

I like to reward honest people with a backlink. I disapprove the installation of “nofollow” attribute by default. Google is becoming too dominant, and I will not apply “nofollow” to each one of my links simply because Google “thinks” it will improve quality. Spammers will always find new ways to bypass the system, always. Placing the nofollow attribute hurts the honest people a lot more than spammers. In my honest opinion, the nofollow attribute is completely useless.

The spammers use various software to automatically submit thousands of comments daily. However, honest people can only submit so much. 90% of blogs have the nofollow attribute which makes it rather difficult to build backlinks and improve rankings, even if you post useful and genuine comments.

I strongly encourage others to remove the nofollow attribute and simply take a few more seconds to moderate the comments and ensure its quality.

That’s exactly why I got rid of nofollow on my blog.

I think more people should switch to dofollow, especially if they have moderation on.

  5. I agree with you on changing to dofollow, I have to moderate
the spamy crap out anyway…. So why not give the good posts
    a bonus link.
