Ever wanted to follow a website’s feed but it didn’t offer any? Google has now integrated a new feature into Google Reader that allows users to receive alerts whenever any new feed for a domain or a specific web page becomes available.
Why Is That Important?
If the websites that you follow contains integrated feed services then this isn’t something you should consider. However, if there’s one of two pages you like to follow but wished you could just get their feed instead, wish no more.
Remember, this option is only available for Google Reader, so if you’re not using GR you might consider switching. Google lets you add web pages simply and easily, track their feed, and alert whenever new feed has arrived.
On the other hand, if you do not want to publish your feed from your pages, simply opt out and Google will not update viewer’s feeds when you publish new content. In order to opt out you must do 1 of the 2 things:
- Add a new meta tag to each page that you don’t want Google to read: <meta name=”googlebot” content=”noarchive”>
- Use robots.txt to block Google crawler alltogether
Welcome to Nick Avile’s complete guide to implementing Kontera on your WordPress blog.
Where do Kontera Ads Appear?
Kontera ads appear under certain words in your content as 2 underlines to differentiate from the typical single underline hyperlink.
How does Kontera Pay You?
Kontera works similar way AdSense does. You will get credit every time a visitors clicks on the ad and paid out as soon as you reach $100. However, Kontera ads are not blocks or images. They are implemented in your text as shown in the image below.
Sign Up for Kontera
Start off by signing up for Kontera. Your registration process will be instant, however, you will need to wait somewhere between 12-48 hours until Kontera manually approves your website before you can place links on it.
Implementing Kontera WordPress Widget
While you wait for your site to get approved, download one of the following plugins that are suited for your WordPress version:
Download Kontera-WordPress Plugin for WP 2.9
Download Kontera-WordPress Plugin for WP 2.8
Download Kontera-WordPress Plugin for WP 2.7
Download Kontera-WordPress Plugin for WP 2.6
After extracting and uploading your plugin you will find “Kontera Settings” option under your “Settings” tab.
First, you will need to input Kontera Publisher ID. To get your publisher ID, login to your Kontera account and navigate to ContentLink Setup > Create Tag.
Input Your Kontera Settings
Input your Kontera Publisher ID and select your ContentLinks’ color to match your website theme and update your settings.
After your website has been approved, text links will show up on your blog! It can’t get any simpler than that.
My 9′o clock post-a-fail hour could not be resisted after I came across this amusing and rather ridiculous hub.
(Warning: By navigating to the link provided above you agree that I am not responsible for any damages the hub author inflicts including, without limitations: excruciating bullsh*t, fail comparison skills, and others.)
Now that you have your gas mask, armor suit, and protective shield on, navigate to the hub link and read up on all the horrible cons of Kontera.
As you get to the pros section, you get quite confused. It seems like the author ran out of space to write. Or maybe the author has pros-phobia. Or maybe he accidentally hit the publish button and is not ingenious enough to add more information. (He later revealed that after 2 weeks of persistent training finally learned how to add more information. Thank you for the addition.)
Since our good friend was incapable of adding a few decent PROS for the Kontera program, perhaps I’m going to share some of my knowledge. I personally don’t think monkeys should be allowed to write hubs. Apparently it’s not against their TOS.
Kontera Pros – Nick Aviles Approved!
Pro #1: Unlike the AdSense program, Kontera in-text ads is not affected by the tons and tons of AdSense and other advertisement blockers such as the Mozilla firefox Adblock Plus. (Make sure to active while browsing darkside’s hubs)
Pro #2: Kontera ads do not take up ANY SPACE on your website at all, whereas AdSense and other types take up a big chunk of your page.
Pro #3: Kontera approves publishers manually whereas AdWords accepts anyone into the program as long as they pay.
Pro #4: Many huge companies are partnered with Kontera including Ford, Microsoft, Bank of America, Sun, Best Buy, Nintendo, and many others.
Pro #5: Kontera ads do not appear somewhere on the side as a banner or a block that visitors learned to ignore. Kontera appears inside the text content that visitors came for in the first place, which will ultimately increase conversion rate.
Pro #6: Kontera offers advanced targeting capabilities and optimization tools that will increase your ads performance and increase conversions. AdSense doesn’t offer anything like that.
Pro #7: Kontera offers brand protection that monitors and ensures that your ad is placed on pages of suitable content only.
Pro #8: Kontera Network reaches 100 Million Monthly Uniques. Almost as much as your Kontera hater hub.
144 AdSense Cons
[Edited by Nick Aviles on September 11, 2001 11:23AM]
I apologize for the delay, had to finish a side job in New York city. Unfortunately, my list of 144 AdSense Cons list burned to ashes in a fire. However, one page did survive, and I scanned it and uploaded below:
Google’s decision to end self-censorship of its Chinese search engine in China has spurred out trouble with the Chinese regulators. According to Google’s Jan 12 post, Google may end up closing the Chinese offices, losing $600 million yearly revenues.
The Chinese government laws and regulations prohibit non censorship when it comes to search engines. Google decided not to comply with the Chinese laws. Chinese primary search engine, Baidu, is still China’s leading search engine as of today. Google’s leave from China will not hurt the Chinese in any way.
Ever since Microsoft’s initial Bing release, the search engine is becoming more popular every day. More users are searching Bing.com for answers.
As of December 2008, Bing’s shares went up 2.4% by December 2009, as well as search growth increased by almost 50% while Google’s search growth increased by 20%.
Although Bing is definitely a threat to Google, as of now, Google still remains the world’s top search engine. As Bing’s search growth grows, Yahoo search growth, on the other hand, is steadily declining, bringing concern to all Yahoo investors.

The long-awaited Google PageRank update has finally arrived! Google has made a nice new years gift for everyone by updating PageRank, and was quite generous to provide this very site with a PageRank 1. Of course, this may not seem like much, but it’s definitely an improvement.
Have You Checked Your PageRank?
PageRank updates every few months or so. Although the number itself may not update instantly, your actual rankings depend on the backlinks, not the actual PageRank number itself. Download the Google Toolbar and check your page’s PageRank to see if you made progress.
PageRank is important when it comes to ranking on Google SERPs, and building backlinks will provide your site with extra traffic.
Are You Consistent?
Find things to keep you motivated and working towards your goals. If you don’t have any PageRank, set a goal to get PageRank 1 and start working towards it. Consistency is the key, and gradual building of backlinks over time will increase your site’s PageRank and reward you for your work.
It’s quite important to modify your .htaccess file in the root of your domain in order to prevent duplicate content in search engines. Google, and other search engines, may penalize you for having duplicate content, and even drop you in rankings. To avoid this from happening, decide whether you want to have www. before your domain name or not.
If you want your site to look like http://www.nickaviles.com, paste this inside your .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.nickaviles\.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.nickaviles.com/$1 [R=301,L]
If you want your site to look like http://nickaviles.com, paste this code inside your .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.nickaviles\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://nickaviles.com/$1 [R=301,L]
What is the difference between using www or not using www? Absolutely none. It doesn’t matter which one you pick, as long as you stick to one, all should go well.
Building Backlinks
Please note that if you’re building backlinks for your domain and some of your backlinks have no www but your site is forced www (or vice versa) the search engines will automatically consider them as www because you are using permanent redirect.
This would not work, however, if you would not use permanent redirect using .htaccess or PHP. So keep in mind to set up a permanent redirect for either one. Never have both www and no www working at the same time. Unless you want to drop out of rankings that is.
